Distinguished Alumni J.K. Simmons inspires the next generation
J.K. Simmons, ’78, met with College of Visual and Performing Art students this fall in the Masquer Theatre.
You might know him as Dr. Emil Skoda in NBC’s Law & Order, the voice of the yellow M&M, characters in The Closer, Spider-Man or Juno, to name a few.
Simmons, who received a music degree from UM, shared his sense of humor with students and perspective on being an actor. He stressed the importance of knowing a little bit about everything in the industry and the value of truly connecting with fellow cast members.
In answering questions, it was apparent that this actor enjoys his fans and fellow thespians. His casual demeanor made it easy for students to visit with him afterwards and pose for pictures.
Simmons is one of four graduates who received this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award presented by the UM Alumni Association. He lives in Hollywood, California with his wife and two children.
