Attracting the best scholars
Graduate students are the lifeblood of a research university, playing critical roles in research, creative scholarship, teaching and outreach. They often supervise and mentor undergraduates while pursuing their own educations.
We want to increase the number of graduate students at UM and recruit the most talented, accomplished scholars into campus graduate programs. Students often weigh options from multiple institutions when deciding where to attend graduate school. Universities with the most generous fellowship offers attract the best scholars.
Presidential Graduate Fellowships
This new program will establish 25 competitive graduate fellowships, which award $25,000 per year, per student. Both master’s and doctoral students will compete for these prestigious awards. Opportunities exist for donors to name individual fellowships after themselves or in honor of a loved one.
College/School Graduate Fellowships
When an outstanding student plans to pursue graduate education, we want to have the resources to keep that student at UM. In fact, deans relish the opportunity to offer graduate education to their top undergraduates. Private support for graduate fellowships in our schools and colleges will improve our competitive position. Gifts are welcome for fellowships for full or partial tuition.
Laura Becerra ’06, a native of Chile, is the latest recipient of the George E. Bright Memorial Fellowship. The award recognizes a student in natural resource conservation who has demonstrated ability as a researcher. Laura earned a master’s in environmental studies. Now, she is working toward a doctorate in forestry. She has conducted research in Zambia as part of her study of the interaction between tourism, economic development and conservation.
“I am motivated by students and can’t wait to get them excited about international development, conservation and the complexities of tourism.”
-Laura Becerra, Environmental Studies ’06
