Oscar J. Craig Legacy

Oscar J. CraigOscar J. Craig, the University of Montana’s first president, believed the purpose of a university was to prepare students for their environment. Within five days of arriving in Missoula in 1895, he issued a pamphlet outlining plans to position the University to achieve this goal. He famously coined what became UM’s official slogan at the time, “The University — it shall prosper.” After serving as president for 13 years, Craig retired in 1908. His accomplishments laid the foundation for the future of UM and continue to ensure the University prospers.

Despite scarcity of funds, he pursued his vision with determination and optimism. During his presidency, the Science Hall, Main Hall, Women’s Hall, Gymnasium, and University Library (now Jeannette Rankin Hall) were constructed. He established two schools, more than a dozen departments, and grew the number of faculty from five members to 27. The president himself taught in several fields, including history and philosophy. In addition to academics, Craig oversaw the start of extracurricular organizations that remain central to UM student life today, including the Montana Kaimin student newspaper and the Associated Students of the University of Montana.
